What's In Your Bag? Essential Items for the Everyday

By Liz Abinante

It's impossible to be prepared for every scenario the world can throw at you, but you can do your best to try. There are a few simple items that can prevent the smallest disaster to the biggest - from a run in your hose to a surprise random hook up, we've got you covered.

I'll admit, this is a pretty comprehensive list, and it may require you to purchase a bigger purse. This list goes beyond the essentials almost every woman carries at some point: chapstick, lotion, condoms, tampons, make up for touch ups, etc.

Clear nail polish: this does more than stop a run in your nylons: it also removes scuffs from shoes, prevents buttons from falling off (a quick drop on the threads will hold them in place), and (impressively) stop a window crack from spreading.

Disposable underwear: you will be thanking me one day for this. Although I'm sure most of us are beyond the age where skid marks and surprise periods are a problem, other awkward occurrences can leave you stranded and needing a new pair of undies. Sometimes, going commando is a wise alternative, but that's not always a viable option. You can typically buy them in packs of 3 or 5, with each pair coming individually wrapped in a surprisingly small package. You can even get some from La Senza!

Baby wipes: these also come in surprisingly small portable packages and have unlimited uses. Spill something on yourself and can't find a suitable bathroom? Need to remove smudged make up? Feel the need to freshen up your naughty bits before a chance encounter? I'd recommend carrying unscented ones to avoid any awkward allergies.

Compact mirror: this one is a major no brainer, but worth mentioning. It's not vain to carry around a small mirror in your bag, it's just good common sense. There's nothing more awkward than going to a business meeting with spinach stuck in your teeth leftover from lunch or your eyeliner smeared across your cheek.

Dental floss: another no brainer. But think outside the box! Dental floss isn't just for making sure your teeth are pristine and healthy. In emergencies, you can sew with it (which would require a needle, I suppose), temporarily lock a suitcase or purse by tying a tight knot, fashion yourself a temporary hair tie, and repair umbrellas. Not to mention, in case of a freak accident, it can be used as a temporary medical device to help stop bleeding.

Tide to go: these little detergent pens are priceless - and they actually work on more minor stains. It's not going to remove wine from your white silk blouse, but if you get a little spot of enchilada sauce on your slacks, you'll probably be safe.

Some items that didn't make the list, but you probably carry them anyways: iPod, notebook and pen, mints or gum, spare change (apparently phone booths still exist), lotion, aspirin or ibuprofen, and antacids.

What "must have" emergency items do you keep stored in your purse?

Tide to Go is a must! I seriously have one in each bag I use on a semi-regular basis. Glad it made the list!

Something else I keep in my going out purses: perfume samples. Even if they're not your usual scent, they're perfect for those on-the-go moments when you need a little touch-up.

Really essential? A decent pocket knife. As a tool, for peeling fruit, for battling stubborn wrappings...
