The Balance of What You Give and Take

By Cate Sevilla

Are you aware of when you're giving away too much of your time, energy and effort?

A lot of the people I know who are really into self development, psychology, and mental health/well-being say how in-tune they are with their bodies.

Some can pick up immediately on physical symptoms that let them know that they’re stressed. Others even notice if they’ve consumed a type of food or an ingredient that their body is sensitive to, and it made me wonder how many of us are actually that in-tune with what our bodies and minds are telling us.

I recently figured out that I get rather grumpy and stressed out if I commit to doing too many things in one week, and don’t leave myself enough time to do certain projects I’m working on, or even just leave time to myself to breathe.

A lot of us just allow ourselves to become stretched really thin. We try to balance 1000 different balls in the air and then wonder why we have such little patience or tolerance for the little annoyances that most people can just easily let go of or move on from.

It’s difficult, but I think if everyone were to monitor their moods and how they correlate with their schedules and diaries, I think most of us would be a lot happier.

Keeping a close eye on the give/take ratio in our friendships, relationships and day-to-day communications can also make a difference in our daily lives. It can be easy to allow yourself to ask too much of other people without taking into consideration what you can give. It can be just as easy to allow yourself to turn into some sort of energy fruit stand, where you pass our your time, energy and effort like it’s 2-for-1 or 75% off.

Your time, your energy and your effort are all incredibly valuable and important. As is making sure you’re helping and being mindful of how you give to others.

Keep a close eye on yourself and make sure that you’re not asking too much of yourself, and, likewise, that you’re not allowing others to ask too much of you either.
