Winter Solstice: The Other Holiday

Long ago when humans had an average life span of a tween, someone observed what we now call the winter solstice: the shortest day and longest night of the year, compliments of the earth’s tilt. With a flair for neuroticism rivaling Woody Allen, ancient cultures zealously erected sacred sites and performed solstice ceremonies, lest the gods deprive them of the returning light.

Have Yourself a Tacky Little Christmas

Anyone who knows me knows I’m not a big fan of stuff. Stuff being the useless, gaudy crap collecting dust on storage shelves long forgotten. Crap being an umbrella term encompassing such oddities as tacky Christmas decor. Of course we’re all entitled to our own sense of “good” aesthetics – and if it’s tacky you seek, it’s tacky you shall find.

Online Dating: Rules & Worries, Redefined

Whether or not we believe in them, or follow them, we all know that there is a certain set of 'rules' – some spoken, some unspoken – that accompany the dating game. Ideals such as 'Don't contact him unless you have something to say' or 'Wait 2-3 days after a date before talking again' or 'Never break up with someone online, through a text message or ... on a post-it.'

Motherhood Survival Tips for the Festive Season

Last Christmas was our first with The Bambino, which for some reason we decided to make a rod for own back by inviting my crackerjack family around. Much as I love them, I really was contemplating shooting the lot of them by cracker pulling time and when you throw in all the preparation, and the madness in the run up to it, here are a few suggestions to ensure you don't go off your rocker and actually enjoy your own Christmas. Tell people to get their own frickin gift ...

Om without the Fluff: Tarot for the New Age Phobic

Here’s the skinny on 21st century Tarot. While new Tarot decks seem to proliferate like rabbits, not all renditions require the presence of fairies, dolphins and other like-minded elements. Here’s a list of decks to satiate your inner goth/girly-girl/manga/artist extraordinaire: Bohemian Gothic Tarot (Magic Realist Press)

What's the Difference Between Gaydar and Stereotyping?

I take kickboxing lessons twice a week. I love it. It keeps me fit, thin and it doesn’t hurt to be able to defend yourself. For any BitchBuzz-ers in London - I use KB KickBoxing. They have classes everyday of the week and its pretty cheap as well!

Surviving The Holidays with Your In-Laws

Last year, owing to Divorced Family Fun, my boyfriend and I spent Christmas together. Despite having been together for nearly 8 years, we have always managed to avoid the collision of cultures that is Christmas with your other half. Our parents live so close together that we generally just spend the evening of December 25th together, choosing instead to spend the remainder of the day with our respective families. In the weeks leading up the big day, I was wracked with fear – as was he, I shou...

Chances are, there's a geek somewhere on your Christmas list this year. They might be a geek in hiding, or they might be completely unabashed about their love of Star Trek, or Dungeons & Dragons. Hell, you might be looking for ideas to give other folks, for things to buy for you, you awesome geek, you. Whatever flavor of geek you may have to buy for this year, there is probably something on this list that will work quite well for them (or for you)!

Should I Be Concerned That I’m Changing My Name?

I’m getting married on Sunday. My name will change. In fact, I’ve already been writing under my chosen married name since August, when BitchBuzz launched. As of this weekend I will be adopting my husband’s surname, which is, obviously, Goldstein. Why? Only in two out of the last five couples I knew were getting married did the woman take the man’s name and they were both quite traditional couples.
