No one can have missed the news last year that top German magazine Brigitte banned professional models. I was amazed that a popular publication was taking such a big step to prove to its readers that it understands them and their bodies, but what happened in other countries? Well, seemingly nothing if you look at the newspaper headlines rather than on the newsagent's shelves...

From a very young age my mother instilled in me a certain logic, if you can call it that. There were clothes that could be worn to school, to friends houses, out to dinner and to events and then there were what she called “play clothes” – clothes for hanging around the house, playing outside or engaging in any kind of athletic activity. They were not to overlap.

Have you ever wondered why you crave foods like white bread, pasta and cakes? It is because they are the prostitute of the food world. Carbohydrates give us easy access to energy and glucose, the main source of fuel for the brain. You get that quivering feeling at say 3pm, finding it hard to focus and the brain is screaming “GIVE ME A PICK-ME-UP NOW!!” – you reach for the food that is going to give you the most energy in the quickest fashion.

Relationships, we are always told, are tricky beasts. However, despite this pessimistic (or is that realistic) mantra being chanted into my ear at every available opportunity, I have always believed that when it comes down to it, relationships rely on two things. Honesty and fairness. There are probably many other components that combine to make a relationship actively wonderful, but on the most basic level these two elements will see you through the hard times.

Janice Turner wrote an article for The Times a few years ago entitled "When the Bikini Line Turned to a Battleline" where she pondered, "why in the West is the pubic bush, the most luxuriant manifestation of our sexual hormones, now universally condemned as 'unsexy'?" Indeed. Who started this rumour and can we please ask them to stop now? Enough is enough.

Staying together after you’ve gotten hitched and pushed out a couple kids is not easy. It’s, in fact, one of the hardest things in the world to do, if the sheer amount of RomComs, ChickLit titles, and sitcoms dedicated to the topic are any indicator. It would seem that more often than not, it’s the man in the relationship who decides that his wife and children are boring, or not making him happy, and he jumps ship. Sometimes it’s the woman, but in all of these books and TV shows and

There is a revolution afoot, the tiny sound of marching vegetables into the world of haute cuisine. Vegetarianism appears to becoming the new restaurant trend to hit the UK. Coupled with an increasing awareness of the burden of raising animals has on world resources, expanding culinary innovation and interest in healthy lifestyles; the new breed of vegetarian restaurants are sleek, modern and as far removed from their stereotypical image as you can get. Think Stella McCartney rather than Swam...

Going to the gym is not something I look forward to. Heck, I don’t think it’s something anyone looks foward to. People’s motivation for going to the gym varies. Some go because they look forward to ripped abs and tiny, toned buttocks. I look forward to being able to eat a cheeseburber Happy Meal with an extra cheeseburger on the side with only half the guilt. To each their own.

Time, the feature of life that never changes, stands still, gets bigger or smaller. It has been the same for millennia and always will. We have lots of ‘time-saving devices’ but how many times do you find yourself uttering the immortal phrase ‘I don’t have enough time’?Eating used to be a leisurely pursuit, a social occasion allowing people the opportunity to bond with their colleagues, family and friends over a shared meal. Mediterranean cultures such as the French Spanish and Italian...

On May 6th it’s not just time to get down to the polling station (if you’re in the UK, that is). Set a reminder in your diaries and break out your blue ribbon because it’s also International No Diet Day.The first INDD, in 1992, was organised by Mary Evans Young – a former eating disorder sufferer and campaigner who wanted to promote size acceptance and was horrified by the lengths women and girls were going to in order to lose weight.
